Expert warns of a rise in infections following thousands attended protests

A senior oncologist has warned about the daily rise in new coronavirus infections following two weekends of protests in London.

Professor Karol Sikora said the government should “keep such a close eye on the infection data,” after police were faced with another weekend of protestors.

Professor Sikora, has been dubbed the “Positive Professor” as he adopts an upbeat tone when discussing the pandemic.

But he said, he hopes the number of new coronavirus cases can be brought down further over the next few days.

He warned, “We have to keep such a close eye on the infection data after recent events.

“It’s hovering around 1,500 at the moment (1,514 today).

“Let’s hope we see that move in the right direction over the coming days.”

However, an NHS Digital graph shows that 111 hotline calls have plummeted from 25,000 over coronavirus since the lockdown on 23 March to almost zero.

Tens of thousands of people who attended protests across London over the last two weeks and flouted social distancing rules, appears to have had no effect, thus far with a rise in cases.
