Andrea Leadsom hopes Merkel will support reopening ‘withdrawal agreement’

Leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom MP said on Tuesday, she hopes Angela Merkel the German chancellor will agree to reopen the withdrawal agreement.

With the agreement reopen it could get the Brexit deal passed by Parliament.

Theresa May is to meet with the French president, Emmanuel Macron and the German chancellor, Angel Merkel on Tuesday to discuss Brexit.

May will discuss with Macron and Merkel a further extension to Article 50 during the Paris meeting in a bid to try and break the deadlock.

Downing Street has said, ahead of the emergency European Council Summit on Wednesday, May is expected to speak with other EU leaders in a round of phone calls to discuss the extension.

Leadsom said, “What I think would be fantastic if Angela Merkel will try to support a proper UK Brexit by agreeing to reopen the Withdrawal Agreement.

“There have been rumours over the weekend that some senior members of the German government would be willing to do that in order to get Theresa May’s deal across the line.

“If we could get the prime minister’s deal over the line because the EU have decided to support measures on the backstop then that would be the best possible outcome.”
