New UK prime minister Andy Burnham needs to take the UK back into the EU to avoid becoming the latest prime ministerial victim of Brexit, Rejoin EU Party Clacton by-election candidate John Stevens says.
Stevens welcomed early policy moves by Burnham, such as a push to end rough sleeping, and also his choice as Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey.
However, unless Burnham makes serious early moves to rejoin the EU, he’s likely to face the same political fate as his six predecessors – leaving No. 10 in a relatively short space of time due to the economic and political damage of Brexit, Stevens said.
Burnham also needs to put in place the foundations to underpin future EU membership by replacing the UK’s dysfunctional first-past-the-post electoral system with a form of proportional representation as soon as possible.
Stevens said: “I think two things right now. First, the PM has been completely right to prioritize eradicating homelessness, which is the biggest blight upon our supposed comprehensive welfare state.
“Second, to get our inflation and interest rates down, the key to economic growth, we have to start the process of correcting the national mistake of Brexit.
“If Burnham doesn’t do this, his premiership will fail like that of every one of his predecessors since 2016.”
