The shadow Brexit Secretary has been elected as the new Labour leader, beating Rebecca Long-Bailey, and Lisa Nandy.

Sir Kier Starmer has been an MP since 2015 and will now replace Jeremy Corbyn as the new leader.

Sir Kier said, “It’s the honour and privilege of my life to be elected as Leader of the Labour Party. I will lead this great party into a new era, with confidence and hope, so that when the time comes, we can serve our country again – in government.”

He said it comes “at a moment like none other in our lifetime” due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

Sir Kier said the current crisis “reminds us of how precious life is but also how fragile.”

He added, “It reminds us of what really matters – our family, our friends, our relationships, the love we have one another, our health, the connections with those that we don’t know.

“These make up society. They remind us that we share our lives together. We have to trust one another and look after one another.”

The Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner, has won the contest to become Labour’s new deputy leader.

In a message on his Facebook page, Corbyn said he would not be quiet now that he is returning to the backbenches.

The former Labour leader said, “I can assure you my voice will not be stilled.

“I’ll be out there campaigning for socialism, peace and justice, and I feel sure we’ll be doing that together.”
