In June 2020, the Metinvest Group founded the Metinvest Polytechnic University, the first postsecondary school of its kind in the Ukraine. The university offers advanced technology and modern educational programs to help students pursue careers in the steel and mining field after graduation.

Goals of the new Ukrainian University

The new university will operate as an educational and scientific institution, with most of its course offerings focusing on scientific subjects. Students can earn a junior bachelor’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree in their chosen field. Although it is not currently part of the building plan, the Metinvest Group hopes to create a production and scientific center at a later date.

Specialisations offered at Metinvest Polytechnic University

Students with engineering degrees who have studied steel and mining are in especially high demand in Ukraine. The school admits any student who wants to pursue a career in this field. Metinvest Group has also provided its own employees the opportunity to enroll in the new university to help further their careers. Students at Metinvest Polytechnic University can choose to specialise in one of these areas:

  • Architecture and civil engineering
  • Automation of production processes
  • Chemical engineering and technology
  • Computer science
  • Economics
  • Environmental studies
  • Metallurgy
  • Material sciences
  • Mining
  • Occupational safety

The Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science has already granted permission for the university to license its programs in computer science, economics, health and safety, metallurgy, metal science, and mining. Students who complete these programs will receive a certificate of achievement recognised by the Ukrainian government. The government will only issue a program license for technical specialties it considers promising.

The curriculum development team at the university consists of 18 scientists and 11 doctors. Metinvest Polytechnic University also receives assistance with curriculum development from the European Society for Safety at Work. Once students reach the third year of their degree program, they supplement the education they receive in the classroom by completing internships and practical training programs at one of the Metinvest Group’s enterprises.

Employees of Metinvest Group make up the university’s first trainees

Employees of Metinvest Group are obtaining additional information in metallurgy, mining, and occupational health and safety programs. Metinvest Polytechnic University expects to open to its first group of approximately 200 students in 2022. Students must have completed all secondary school requirements before enrolling. Depending on their course load and other commitments, students can expect to spend three to 5 1/2 years obtaining their degrees.

Metinvest Group steps in to meet an unfulfilled need in Ukraine

Companies requiring the services of trained engineers typically pay good wages to employees who have the required skills. However, no universities offering these types of courses have existed in Ukraine until now. While some teach the theoretical skills engineers need, none have the on-site technology necessary for pre-engineers to practice mechanical skills they will need on the job.

Thanks to Metinvest Group, the new university will have modern laboratories with equipment students need to help them become first-rate engineers. The university partnered with well-known manufacturing leaders that offer advanced technical solutions and engineering equipment. These organisations include Festo, Honeywell Ukraine, Schneider Electric, and Siemens. Microsoft is currently working to develop the school’s information technology infrastructure.

Location and design of the new Metinvest Polytechnic University

World-famous architect Hiroki Matsuura, who works with a company called MASA Architects in the Netherlands, is the designer chosen by Metinvest Group to create the new science education building.

Matsuura plans to use steel as the primary building material to highlight what the university offers. Metinvest Polytechnic University will have a large roof terrace that provides students and faculty with prime views of the city.

About the Metinvest Group

Metinvest Group is an independent global mining and steel company with steel plants in Ukraine, EU, and the UK and coal mines in the United States. In 2019, the company was ranked the 42nd largest mining and steel organisation in the world after having produced 9.6 million tons of crude steel. Metinvest was founded in 2006.

The company manages the complete chain of production, starting with extraction of coal and iron ore. Metinvest Group’s manufacturing process creates both finished and semifinished steel products, and its proximity to prominent ports and railway lines enables it to provide steel and raw materials to clients around the world. Currently, the company serves more than 10,000 clients in almost 100 countries.

Yuriy Ryzhenkov, who serves as the CEO of Metinvest Group, noted that the opening of Metinvest Polytechnic Institute held special significance for the company. The opening of the university coincides with the 15th anniversary of Metinvest Group and the 30th anniversary of independence for Ukraine.
