The fire which hit Mati, 29 km (18 miles) east of the capital, late Monday afternoon was by far the country’s worst since flames devastated the southern Peloponnese peninsula in August 2007, killing dozens.
Hundreds of tourists have fled to beaches while three woman and a child drowned in the sea while trying to escape the flames.
A mass evacuation is underway with military vessels and army helicopters mobilised to help those stuck in the harbour area.
