The French government are considering extending their coronavirus state of emergency until at least 16 February 2021, and more regions are to enter the red alert status.

There will be curfews imposed under the state of emergency from 9pm to 6am across some of the largest cities.

Last Friday France recorded more than 30,000 cases in one day.

Government spokesperson Gabriel Attal said that France’s hospital emergency wards are operating at 40% due to the high numbers of Covid infections.

Hospitals in the cities of Clermont and Dijon are moving into emergency mode, which has forced them to cancel staff leave and postpone non-Covid related operations.

Earlier in October Paris hospitals entered into emergency mode as half of all patients are in intensive care units with the virus.
