According to reports France could be added to the government’s red list over concerns the South African, or Beta variant is spreading across the country.
MPs are looking at the situation in France and official have been told to carry out a “deep dive” into the figures of the Beta variant and the transmission rate, according to The Telegraph.
The newspaper was told by senior Whitehall sources that this was mentioned during a meeting on Wednesday, and other sources said this was based on a study by the Joint Biosecurity Centre (JBC).
The government have told the Department for Health and the JBC to “interrogate” the South African figures in France as they have a “significantly higher” prevelance of the Beta variant compared to the rest of the world.
The government has persistently warned the public that travel guidance can change at any moment under the traffic light system.
