Fears of imminent Ukraine invasion as tens of thousands Russian and Belarusian troops start ‘violent’ and ‘dangerous’ war games

10th Feb 22 4:01 pm

European leaders are concerned for security as Russia and Belarusian troops have started a “very violent” war games which will last from 10 to 20 February.

The joint military exercise has been described as “dangerous” whilst Russia doe not understand the British government’s anxiety over the drills.

Moscow and Minsk have not divulged how many troops are taking part in the war games, but NATO estimates there is around 30,000 Russian troops in Belarus.

Released footage by the Russian Defence Ministry Press Service shows tanks and anti-aircraft systems in action.

The military drills are live firing which includes anit-tank missiles and armoured infantry firing rounds at targets.

NATO Secretary General Jens Soltenberg warned that “This is a dangerous moment for European security.

“The number of Russian forces is going up.

“The warning time for a possible attack is going down.

“We are closely monitoring Russia’s deployment in Belarus, which is the biggest since the end of the Cold War.”

Speaking to France Inter radio, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian described the military exercises as a “very violent gesture that concerns us.”

Russian and Belarusian military leaders said in a joint statement, “The purpose of the exercise is to work on methods to stop and repel external aggression within the framework of a defensive operation.”

Recent US intelligence suggest that Russia will have sufficient military numbers to invade Ukraine by 15 February which would see more than 3,000 troops parachuting in to the country with a full scale land and air invasion.

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, described the drills as “psychological pressure.”

He added the Ukraine are used to the experience, he said, “The risks are there and have been there since 2014. The issue is the degree of these risks, and how we respond to them.”

Speaking after his talks with the British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergio Lavrov said he could not understand British anxiety over the drills.

He said, “Some time soon, Western nations will find out the Russian-Belarusian drills wrapped up and that Russian troops came back to the Russian territory.

“They will then make a noise about the West forcing Russia over to de-escalate while it will be like selling air: Everyone knows well that Russian troops always come back to their bases at the end of all drills.”

Lavrov accused Truss on Thursday of refusing to listen and grandstanding on Thursday as it appears talks to stabilise the situation between Russia and Ukraine are rapidly failing leaving Europe on the Brink of war.

The British Foreign Secretary held a joint news conference with Lavrov who said, “I’m honestly disappointed that what we have is a conversation between a dumb and a deaf person…Our most detailed explanations fell on unprepared soil.

“They say Russia is waiting until the ground freezes like a stone so its tanks can easily cross into Ukrainian territory.

“I think the ground was like that today with our British colleagues, from which numerous facts that we produced bounced off.”
