Facebook blocks Admiral discount plan

Would you want a computer analysis to figure out how safely you drive?

Facebook has blocked insurer Admiral from accessing young drivers’ online pages to help set up car insurance premiums.

Admiral wanted new motorists’ permission to look at their online posts to decide their safety as a driver on the road.

If any young driver was seen to be at risk, a discount would be offered to them.

Facebook said on the day of the launch that Admiral could not determine a discount based solely on posts and likes made by the user.

The social media giant allows Facebook users to log into the Admiral app for verification purposes but will not permit the firm access to users posts to work out discounts.

A Facebook spokesperson said: “Protecting the privacy of the people on Facebook is of utmost importance to us. We have clear guidelines that prevent information being obtained from Facebook from being used to make decisions about eligibility,”

“Our understanding is that Admiral will then ask users who sign up to answer questions which will be used to assess their eligibility.”

Admiral have since said the app will launch with “reduced functionality”.
