Public health England (PHE) medical director, Dr Yvonne Doyle told Sky news on Monday morning that she “suspects there are already cases of coronavirus in the UK.”
She added that the UK is “well prepared” for the deadly virus.
On Monday China’s national health commission said there has been 769 new confirmed cases over the 24-hours to midnight on Sunday. There are now more than 3,000 confirmed cases, 461 of those are in a critical condition and 80 are confirmed dead in China.
On Sunday Ma Xiaowei China’s health minister warned the deadly outbreak of coronavirus is “getting stronger” and there are concerns over the risk the virus could “mutate.”
There have been confirmed cases of coronavirus in Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, US, Canada, Australia and France. There have been no confirmed deaths outside of China.
The British home secretary Priti Patel said the government are working “to ensure we do our utmost to keep the British public safe.”
