4th Jan 21 3:31 pm

The Prime Minister is to address the nation this evening at 8pm as more than 300,000 cases of the virus have been recorded in six consecutive days.

A Number 10 spokesman said, “The spread of the new variant of COVID-19 has led to rapidly escalating case numbers across the country.

“The prime minister is clear that further steps must now be taken to arrest this rise and to protect the NHS and save lives.

“He will set those out this evening.”

Parliament have been recalled today to sit this Wednesday to vote on new measures that will be bought in. This comes after a further 58,784 Covid cases have been recorded on Monday, with 407 more people have died from coronavirus, government data has shown.

The Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called for an immediate full national lockdown on Sunday as cases have surged.

Sir Keir told PA news agency on Monday afternoon, “I hope the Prime Minister has been listening to the clear calls for tough national restrictions.”

More measures are needed to “get the virus under control, protect the NHS and create the space for the vaccine to be rolled out as quickly as humanly possible.”

Green MP Caroline Lucas criticised Johnson on Twitter and wrote, “Simply hinting at tougher COVID measures ‘in due course’ is SO irresponsible, yet again government failing to act in time.

“We need national lockdown NOW with learning moved online & use time to make schools safe & finally fix failed Test, Trace, Isolate.”

Conservative MP Jeremy Hunt, chair of the Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee and who is the former Health Secretary has also urged Boris Johnson to place England into a full national lockdown.

Hunt slammed the Prime Minister and wrote on Twitter, “Time to act: thread on why we need to close schools, borders, and ban all household mixing RIGHT AWAY.”

He warned that the current situation with the NHS is “off the scale” and England cannot “afford to wait” any longer, decisive action must be taken now to stop the spread of the virus.
