The government have added Birmingham to the watch list as an “area of enhanced support” and Northampton has become an “area of intervention.”

Northampton is in the highest risk category and requires the most support and Birmingham will receive extra resources for additional contact tracing and more testing centres for the virus.

Latest Public Health England (PHE) figures show that Northampton is almost level with Oldham with 78.4 cases per 100,000 population which is up from 74.4 with 176 confirmed coronavirus cases.

A sandwich factory in Northampton was closed on Friday with all staff and family members being forced to self-isolate for two-weeks.

The sandwich factory who supply M&S had 300 staff test positive last week for the virus.
