UK economy shrinks as pandemic persists

The UK economy shrank by 2.6 per cent month-on-month in November as measures to control Covid-19 hit economic activity. It was the first monthly fall in output since the depths of lockdown in April, but was not as bad as had been feared. City economists had forecast a 5.7 per cent decline.

Paul Dales, chief UK economist at Capital Economics, said: “The economy has built up a fair bit of immunity to lockdowns, as November’s second lockdown was much less painful for the economy than the first.”
