Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists are vowing to shut down key government sites in Westminster for the next two weeks, as they are demanding urgent action on climate change.

XR has said their protest will be as much as five times larger than the protests held in April which saw more than 2,000 activists, over 1,000 arrests and bought disruption and misery for commuters.

More than 10,000 activists have confirmed they will protest for two weeks and plan to block “every single road” in and around Westminster.

Deputy assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor, of the Metropolitan Police said, “The Met has been planning the policing operation for this protest, unprecedented in its length and scale, for several months.

“They are planning a prolonged, coordinated protest, designed to bring the heart of London to a standstill and disrupt the daily business of people who live, work and are visiting London.

“Londoners need to know that while we will do everything in our power to minimise and manage the impact of these protests, they will inevitably cause significant disruption.”
