A Minister has said on Monday that he believes the UK could be the first country to transmission from the pandemic to an endemic.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) special envoy Dr David Nabarro warned that Covid “has many surprises in store for us” as the speed of cases across Europe is a “cause for concern.”

The Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said he believes the UK could be the first major economy to transition from pandemic to endemic as a resuelt of vaccines.

Speaking on LBC radio Zahawi said, “Our four-step plan meant that we were able to open up the economy in the summer.

“Some said it was a mistake, I think it was absolutely the right thing to do.

“We will probably, I hope, without being complacent, be the first major economy in the world to demonstrate how you transition (from) pandemic to endemic using vaccines.”

Dr Nabarro told Sky News that he is “very anxious” at what the WHO is seeing in Europe and now in Western Europe as cases are soaring.

He said, “I can understand people saying ‘enough,’ this virus just goes on and on, doesn’t it?

“Of course I’m very anxious about what I’m seeing right across Europe, including now in western Europe.

“These very large numbers of cases but it’s also the speed with which they’re increasing, it really is a cause for concern.”

Dr Nabarro added, “We are going to have go on resisting this virus and we do it by making it hard for the virus to get from one person to the other.

We do it with face masks and also with avoiding breathing in the air breathed out by others.

“If we keep that personal protection going, especially in confined spaces, the evidence is really strong that this reduces the size of the surges and the peaks.”

In closing he warned, “Please everybody, take it really seriously – this virus has got so many surprises in store for us.”
