It nailed retail, then it moved into electronics, telecoms and financial services.
In September 2013 it launched its own £119 tablet, called Hudl, which has sold half a million units.
Now Tesco is entering the smartphone market.
Chief executive Philip Clarke told the BBC Tesco will launch its own-brand smartphone later this year.

Full details are yet to be released, but the BBC reports that it will run Google Android software and come loaded with Tesco services ready to use.
The Tesco phone will be designed to rival those at the top end of the market and reportedly be similar to the Samsung Galaxy S5, but Tesco is expected to sell it for significantly less than rivals like Samsung and Apple.
Clarke also said that Tesco will launch the Hudl 2 – an updated version of its tablet – in September this year.
