The Prime Minister will reveal his decision on new Covid restrictions before Christmas Eve in the wake of the Omicron variant.

According to The Sun newspaper, Boris Johnson will reveal within the next 48 hours or so, whether he will bring in a circuit breaker lockdown across England.

It is understood that the Prime Minister is considering placing England back into Step 2 restrictions, this will limit household mixing which will also see pubs and restaurants returning to outdoor service only venues.

A leading expert has warned today that Omicron is “eye wateringly high” and uncertainties remain over the impact this is having on the NHS.

Sir Jeremy Farrar, director of the global charitable foundation Wellcome, warned that “we’re in the most difficult, most uncertain time, perhaps of the whole pandemic, certainly since March of 2020.”

Sir Jeremy warned there is “great uncertainty” as more data will be available today and on Wednesday and if transmissions are increasing with hospitilisations he “would act.”

From Boxing Day new restrictions will start in Scotland with football stadiums and Hogmanay events all to be cancelled.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told Scottish Parliament in a statement that indoor public events will be limited to 100 with 200 seated, and outdoor events will be capped to 500 for three weeks from Boxing Day.

From the 27 December indoor hospitality venues will return back to table service and no more than three households will be allowed to sit as one group.
