Bargain-hunting Londoners looking to get the best deal on their festive travel should get booking now, according to new data released today by the Trainline app, Europe’s leading train and coach app, which reveals that customers made a huge £8.1 million of combined savings last year – the equivalent of 3.3 million packs of mince pies4 or one million Christmas puddings5 – by booking their festive travel in advance.

Londoners are officially the savviest when it comes to booking travel as they made more savings last year by making advanced train travel bookings than any other city in the UK.

Trainline‘s advance train travel booking window is now open, meaning that the festive countdown can begin in earnest, with train operators releasing their tickets for travel home this Christmas. Last year, Trainline customers travelling from London made an average saving of £94.77 per booking – the equivalent of almost 16 bottles of mulled wine6 or five wearable Pomsies toys7, one of retailers’ predicted top toys of Christmas 2018 – by not waiting until the last minute to book their festive travel.

The Trainline app predicts that the top 10 most popular routes for travelling over Christmas (based on this year’s searches for travel during the Christmas period) and their equivalent savings when booking in advance are:

Top 10 Most Popular Routes 20188 (Lapland not included) Average savings achieved in GBP in 2017 by booking in advance
