Energy markets are no longer moved by price data alone.
A regulatory shift, a policy signal, a port disruption, a change in local reporting, a geopolitical escalation or a sudden shift in market expectations can all reshape the risk landscape before that change is visible in conventional datasets.
That is the problem London-based market intelligence company Permutable is trying to solve.
Permutable joins TotalEnergiesOn
The company has been selected to join Batch #7 of TotalEnergiesOn, the accelerator programme run by TotalEnergies for start-ups developing digital technologies relevant to the future of energy, including power and renewables.
For Permutable, the programme is a chance to test its real-time intelligence technology closer to the energy workflows it is designed to support. Its platform turns large-scale multilingual information from news, policy sources, market commentary and local-language reporting into structured signals that institutional teams can use to monitor changing market narratives, detect early shifts in sentiment and understand where risk may be building.
Why applied AI matters for energy
The bigger story is not simply that another AI start-up has joined another corporate accelerator. It is that applied AI is moving into the parts of the economy where decisions are complex, information is fragmented and the cost of being late is high.
Energy is one of those markets.
Power, renewables, commodities, trading, strategy and risk teams are now operating in an environment shaped by supply chain pressure, infrastructure constraints, policy uncertainty, geopolitical risk and changing expectations around the energy transition. The challenge is no longer getting access to more information. It is knowing which signals matter, how they are changing and what they may mean for decisions being made in real time.
“Energy is one of the clearest examples of why decision-makers need a better intelligence layer,” said Wilson Chan, Founder and CEO of Permutable. “The challenge is not just the volume of information, but understanding what is changing, why it matters and where risk may be building before that is obvious in price or reported data.”
A London AI company building for complex markets
Permutable’s selection also says something about London’s AI start-up ecosystem.
London has become a natural base for companies building AI at the intersection of financial markets, commodities, energy, insurance and institutional decision-making. Unlike consumer AI tools, these companies are not trying to make work feel lighter or faster in a generic sense. They are building systems for expert teams that need explainability, traceability and speed.
Permutable sits firmly in that category. Its intelligence products cover macro, commodities, FX, geopolitics and asset-level sentiment, with delivery through APIs, data feeds, dashboards and enterprise workflows. The company’s focus is on helping institutions understand what is driving markets before those shifts are fully visible in traditional data.
Testing intelligence closer to real workflows
Being selected for TotalEnergiesOn gives the home-grown company an opportunity to test that approach in one of the most important arenas for applied intelligence: the future of energy.
“Being selected for TotalEnergiesOn gives us the opportunity to test our technology much closer to real energy workflows,” Chan said. “We are looking forward to working with TotalEnergies’ experts and the wider cohort to understand where real-time intelligence can add practical value for teams operating across the future of energy.”
The six-month programme will allow Permutable to explore practical use cases where market signals, operational context and risk narratives are changing quickly. That could include areas such as power and renewables, commodities intelligence, supply and demand monitoring, policy risk and market sentiment.
The next wave of AI may be less flashy – and more useful
For businesses, the potential value lies in moving from fragmented information to clearer, more explainable intelligence. For London’s start-up ecosystem, Permutable’s inclusion is another example of how the city’s AI companies are moving beyond broad productivity tools and into high-value industrial and institutional applications.
The next wave of AI may not be defined by who builds the flashiest interface. It may be defined by who can turn complexity into usable intelligence for the sectors that need it most. London-based Permutable is betting that energy will be one of them.
