A couple looking to enjoy an evening out can expect to pay more in London than any other major city in the world, according to a report.

The cost of one night in a four-star hotel, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine, cocktails and taxi fares adds up to £330.45 in London, according to TripAdvisor’s TripIndex.

Britain’s capital topped the list ahead of other major European cities such as Oslo, Zurich, Paris and Stockholm, while a couple can expect to pay the least in the Vietnamese city of Hanoi. A night out in this destination would cost British travellers a total of £89.93, the report found.

A spokesperson from the capital’s official promotional organisation, London & Partners, observed that London was voted as the world’s best destination for 2012 by users of the same travel advice website just last month.

“This proves beyond doubt that London is a leading capital city which offers an outstanding wealth of options, diversity and value for money,” said the spokesperson.

While London may have topped this survey, the spokesperson believes it is entirely possible to enjoy a night out in London on a budget by doing your homework.

“We know that usual savvy travellers to London will heavily research their trip prior to arrival, taking advantage of the range of accommodation which covers any budget level.

“We also know that visitors enjoy happy-hours and other special offers and often use good value and reliable travel options across the city – such as travelling on the Underground rather than taking a taxi.

“With the responsibility of being a number one visitor destination comes a realistic and reflective price tag – as is true of other world cities such as Paris, New York and Rome.

“The vast range of activities, events and iconic venues – such as Tower Bridge and Trafalgar Square – which are just two of the 250 free attractions in the capital, make London a fantastic value-for-money destination and give each and every visitor a great return for their investment.”

TripAdvisor’s report found a couple could expect to pay £230.39 for one night in a four-star London hotel, while a return taxi trip would set you back £22.20. Dinner for two would cost an average of £52.86 and cocktails would require £25 of spending money.
