Where is London on the list?

London has been ranked the fifth most sustainable city in the world by Arcadis’ Sustainable Cities Index.

The capital has been put ahead of competitors including Paris, Frankfurt, New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

The index explores the three pillars of sustainability – social (people – reflecting quality of life), environmental (planet – capturing green factors, including energy, pollution and emissions) and economic (profit – reflecting the business environment and economic health) to develop a holistic ranking of the world’s leading cities. The overall index is informed through an analysis of 32 different indicators and is broken down into an overall index and three sub-indices across each pillar.

The study said: “Sitting at the centre of international trade, London ranked third on the ‘Profit’ index of economic performance, beaten only by Singapore and Hong Kong. The city’s economic diversity, dominance as a transport hub, multi-culturalism and transparency for investment have all combined to contribute to its success. Europe’s largest metropolitan economy is also one of the greenest capitals in the world, with over 3,000 parks and green spaces, and subsequently came in an impressive 9th globally for environmental sustainability.”

Mark Prior, Cities Director for London at Arcadis said: “London’s history, economic diversity, dominance as a transport hub, multi-culturalism and transparency for investment are vital ingredients in its success. But the city has reached a tipping point. Population growth is a major challenge and the impact of Brexit could yet see its economic power diminished. The capital’s leadership as a transport – particularly aviation – hub is also being challenged.

“Few thought that London’s economic strength would be challenged in the way that it has since the referendum vote, but the new mayor must persuade global businesses that the city’s infrastructure priorities have not changed and that it remains just as viable outside the European Union.”

Overall the top ten and bottom ten cities in the 2016 Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index are:
