Back in June big gambling firms William Hill, Coral Ladbroke, Betfair Paddy Power, Skybet and Bet 365 said they would increase the levy they pay to help with gambling addition from 0.1% of their profits to 1%.

An independent committee on how to spend that £100m per year will report on Tuesday.

Lord Carlile, a member of the committee, says a new body will be set up “to distribute funding for the alleviation of addiction”.

“The amount of gambling that goes on has increased by a huge amount because of the advent of internet gambling,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
