KLM is the latest airline to cancel many flights as the price of jet fuel soars

KLM has cancelled more than 150 European flights as soaring jet fuel costs linked to Middle East tensions begin to hit airline operations.

The Dutch carrier said it will suspend 80 return services from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport over the next month, citing a sharp rise in kerosene prices that has rendered some routes “no longer financially viable”.

Fuel costs have surged following the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran, with higher global oil prices feeding directly into aviation expenses.

KLM stressed that the cancellations are not due to a shortage of jet fuel, but rather a commercial decision to cut loss-making routes amid elevated operating costs.

Passengers affected by the changes will be rebooked onto alternative flights, with the airline noting that routes to cities such as London and Düsseldorf will be covered by frequent daily services.

The cancelled services account for less than one per cent of KLM’s European schedule over the coming month, but the move highlights mounting pressure on airlines as fuel volatility begins to reshape flight economics.

The airline said in a statement: “KLM expects a busy May holiday period and is making sure passengers can travel to their holiday destinations as planned.”
