Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Iran of already being a participant in Russia’s war against Ukraine, arguing that Tehran’s supply of drones, technology and military assistance to Moscow represents a direct contribution to the conflict.
In an interview with Sky News, the Ukrainian president rejected suggestions that a future Iranian attack on Ukraine would mark the beginning of Tehran’s involvement, saying that cooperation with Russia had already crossed that threshold.
Zelensky pointed specifically to Iran’s supply of Shahed attack drones, which have been used extensively by Russian forces against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
He said Tehran had not only provided thousands of drones but had also transferred technology allowing Russia to develop domestic production capabilities.

“Did they attack us? I think yes,” Zelensky said, arguing that Iran and North Korea had already taken part in the war through military support for the Kremlin.
The Ukrainian leader said Kyiv was attempting to avoid opening additional fronts while fighting Russia, but insisted there should be no illusion about the role played by Moscow’s allies.
He also pointed to North Korea’s reported deployment of troops and supply of ammunition, warning that countries supporting Russia had demonstrated they could not be trusted.
The comments come amid rising tensions between Kyiv and Tehran after Iran accused Ukraine of striking a vessel in the Caspian Sea.
Iranian officials condemned the attack and warned of retaliation, while Iranian media outlets reported threats of possible missile strikes against Ukraine.
Zelensky’s remarks highlight the increasingly international nature of the conflict, as Russia’s war effort becomes more dependent on partnerships with countries willing to provide weapons, technology and manpower.
For Kyiv, the challenge is no longer simply confronting Russian forces on the battlefield, but managing a widening network of states supporting Moscow’s military campaign.
