UK chipmaker raises $200m from Microsoft and BMW

A UK startup that designs AI chips has joined the ranks of the tech unicorns with £1.7bn valuation, after getting financial backing from the likes of BMW and Microsoft.

Existing investors Dell Technologies and Robert Bosch Venture Capital also participated in the round.

Graphcore is trying to design a new class of chips that will be better at crunching the vast amount of data needed to make computers smarter.

The Bristol-based company said it plans to open new offices in Beijing and in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
