Lord Ashcroft biography claims Angela Rayner ‘threatened to resign’

Lord Ashcroft has written a tell-all biography which reveals that Labour’s Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner had threatened to quit over the “impossible” task to build 1,5 million homes that the Party pledged in 2024.

There was a last-minute call by Tony Blair who intervened and persuaded Rayner not to quit, which would have been exceptionally damaging to the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

It was further revealed that Rayner was furious the Chancellor Rachel Reeves was given the 21 room Dorneywood mansion instead of her.

Rayner ended up being given an apartment in the luxury Admiralty House in Whitehall after failed attempts to “fob her off” by giving her a property in Norther Ireland.

The Express reported that Lord Ashcroft’s updated biography revealed that the Deputy Prime Minister had “threatened to resign because she felt she’d been set the impossible target of Labour building 1.5 million new homes.”

“It took a call from Tony Blair to talk her down – which, incidentally, tells you how important Blair is to the Starmer project.”

It was revealed by a Labour source the housebuilding project to build 1.5 million homes would never happen because the UK does not “have enough bricks and there isn’t enough water to supply these houses.”

A Labour MP added, “I think Rayner realised a while ago that the 1.5million new homes target is undeliverable.

But now the penny’s dropped for Angie’s team that she was set up to fail on this all along.”

A source close to Rayner said, “We do not recognise the claims made.

“Angela is proud to be serving as Deputy Prime Minister in Keir’s cabinet and delivering on Labour’s crystal-clear commitment to build 1.5 million homes as part of our Plan for Change.”
