Israel attacks Iran in ‘precise strikes’ which threatens an ‘escalation’ in the Middle East

26th Oct 24 12:58 pm

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) has attacked Iranian military sites in the early hours of Saturday morning in three waves of airstrikes.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) said they carried out “precise strikes” in retaliation to the 11 October missile attacks on Israel.

An Iranian news channel has warned there will be a “proportional reaction” to Israels airstrikes which has killed two Iranian soldiers “while countering projectiles.”

On Saturday, the IDF said in a statement, “Based on intelligence, IAF aircraft struck missile manufacturing facilities used to produce the missiles that Iran fired at the State of Israel over the last year.

“These missiles posed a direct and immediate threat to the citizens of the State of Israel.

“Simultaneously, the IDF struck surface-to-air missile arrays and additional Iranian aerial capabilities, that were intended to restrict Israel’s aerial freedom of operation in Iran.”

The spokesman added that Israel is now on “peak alert” for counter attacks from Iran and their proxies, such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah who are based in Lebanon.

Qatar and Egypt have condemned the attack and they are concerned there could be an “escalation” in the Middle East which threatens the security and stability in the region.

Iran’s foreign ministry said the attacks hit “several military centres” which is a “clear violation” of international law and Tehran “considers itself entitled and obligated to defend itself against foreign acts of aggression.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said, “As has been emphasised many times by the competent authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Republic of Iran considers itself entitled and obliged to defend itself against foreign acts of aggression, based on the inherent right of legitimate defence, which is also reflected in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.”

Tehran said in a statement, “The Islamic Republic of Iran emphasises the use of all the material and spiritual capabilities of the Iranian nation to defend its security and vital interests, as well as standing by its duties towards regional peace and security, the individual and collective responsibility of all countries in the region to protect peace.”

A White House official said Israel’s attacks were “extensive” and “precise,” and “the effect was a proportionate self-defence response.”

The British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said the UK is monitoring a “live situation” and he warned Tehran not to respond.

He said, “This is a live situation, and we are obviously monitoring it closely alongside our partners.”

The said that Israel “has the right to defend itself against Iranian aggression” and urged “restraint” from Israel and Tehran, he added that “Iran should not respond.”

“We will continue to work with allies to de-escalate the situation across the region.”
