Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has provoked widespread derision as he struggled to remember how much he pays to refuel his car.
Asked on his “Call Clegg” LBC radio show on Thursday morning how much he paid for diesel, Clegg claimed he paid £1.38 a litre at a local garage for his second hand Ford Galaxy.
Clegg struggled to be certain on this when pressed as to whether he got this right.
The average diesel price currently is 146.26p, with the lowest UK price being 139.9p and the highest being 157.9p.
According to reports, the last time fuel was at the total recalled by Clegg of £1.38 was last July.

Clegg’s fuel price recollection came after he was asked what the government was going to do to halt the rising cost of fuel hitting motorists.
Has Clegg’s been caught out in basic trap? Asked price of diesel, appears to just pick figure out of air. LDs frantic checking? #CallClegg

“I think everyone would agree that the cost of fuel is one of people’s main worries,” he said.
“What we’ve been doing is…. as you imagine the government can’t control the global prices. What we can do is not add to the motorists burden by adding more duty. We’ve been cancelling Labour’s duty increases – it’s very expensive to cancel these duty increases but we have done so. That’s a very important way that we are trying”
