Serious Fraud Office has announced plans to reinstate criminal charges against Barclays over undisclosed payments to Qatari investors during the credit crisis, two months after a London court dismissed its case.
The SFO had charged Barclays PLC with conspiracy to commit fraud and unlawful financial assistance, and Barclays Bank with unlawful financial assistance, over undisclosed fees paid to Qatar as part of a rescue deal that averted a possible state bailout at the peak of the financial crisis.
In a statement today, Barclays said it “intends to defend the application brought by the SFO” but declined to comment further. The SFO issued a short statement confirming the move and also declined to comment further.
