Tesco are offering lorry drivers a £1,000 joining bonus as a recruitment incentive for those who join the company before 30 September.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has said there is an estimated 100,000 shortages of lorry droves in the UK and around 30,000 HGV driving tests did not happen due to Covid in 2020.
The industry body further said this is an “historic” shortage in lorry drivers, which has been exacerbated following the Brexit rule changes.
Rod McKenzie, managing director of the RHA, said it is “increasingly competitive” to recruit a “a diminishing number of HGV drivers,” which has also driven up wages.
He said that he appreciated the “difficulties” that have been created due to the pandemic and has urged the government to “speed up” driving tests to try and help fill the void in drivers.
Mackenzie added, “We are not seeing any sign of it getting better in the short term.”
