David Davis MP has said on Wednesday that Penny Mordaunt who is the former Defence Secretary, is the “runaway favourite” to be the next Conservative Party leader because the country “want a change.”
A YouGov survey of 879 Tory members which was conducted on Tuesday suggests that Mordaunt has won by a huge margin.
Davis told Sky News, “In this poll, she’s the runaway favourite. Polls are dangerous things to trust because they can flip all over the place but what is significant here is this is consistent with other polls.
“Basically, you’ve seen Penny mooring ahead in the eyes of the party and the country, now she’s the runaway favourite.
“I think it tells you something else as well, and it’s that the party and the country wants a reset moment. They want a change.
“It’s away from Rishi, it’s away from Liz Truss, they see both as a big establishment machines if you like. They want a reset moment.
“It was very important to my colleagues in the house that they got the chance of that reset moment.”
