Tower Hill station evacuated after witnesses say a bag exploded on a Tube train

Here’s what happened

Tower Hill station has been evacuated, leading to major delays on the Circle and District lines, witnesses have reported that a bag exploded on a Tube train.

Initial reports are suggesting that battery charger exploded, police are not treating this as terror related.

Tube service is currently suspended on the Circle line, between Aldgate and Edgware Road, and on the District line, between Aldgate East and Earl’s Court.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “We’ve dealt with a small explosion on a train at Tower Hill station. It is believed to have been caused by a mobile phone charger.”

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called just before 12.30pm to reports of a fire alert. It looks like  was a fire on a train. The station has been evacuated.”

British Transport Police have confirmed that a mobile phone battery charger overheated and exploded.
