Adult acne, often referred to as hormonal acne, is mostly triggered by hormonal imbalances, but there can be many other reasons for this. These include:

  • High levels of stress
  • Bacterial infections
  • Increase in the hormone testosterone
  • Genetics

Foods that cause acne

Your diet can also play a pivotal role in increasing acne breakouts. There are certain foods that can trigger acne. Here is a list of foods that cause acne and should always be avoided:

  1. Dairy products If you’re in the habit of starting your day with a glass of milk, you might want to change your morning routine since milk and all other dairy products including cheese, yoghurt and butter can lead to acne. Dairy products increase the insulin growth factor, which in turn leads to increased production of skin cells and this leads to excess oil production on the surface of the skin. The excess oil clogs the pores of the skin and leads to acne. They are best avoided if you suffer from hormonal acne.
  2. Sugary foods – This might come as a surprise to you but the sugar-laden cereal you love to eat, is on top of the list of foods that cause acne. This is because bacteria feeds on sugar. If you wish to clear your complexion, please maintain a safe distance from foods that are high in sugar. No aerated drinks and chocolates please!
  3. Foods with a High Glycemic Index – Foods such as cookies, cakes, white bread and highly processed cereals have a high glycemic index and they can lead to an increase in your blood sugar levels. Sugar is the perfect food for bacteria. Junk/Fast foods also have a high glycemic index and they also contain excess greasiness. Avoid eating starchy fruits since they are some of the most common foods that cause acne. They can also spike your insulin levels and lead to breakouts and acne. Both sugar and oil can lead to acne and breakouts on the skin, so steer clear off foods with a high glycemic index.

Hormonal acne diet

Now that you know about the foods that cause acne, you must also learn about the foods that can help to control acne and breakouts. The Hormonal Acne Diet Plan cuts down all the sugars, carbs, animal fats and gluten in order to get rid of acne and minimise skin inflammation. Here is a list of foods that you should include in your diet to control and get rid of acne:

  1. Probiotics – Probiotics are good for your digestion and help to take care of the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. They help to maintain the pH levels of the skin and control excess production of oil. Foods that contain probiotics include yoghurt, unfermented milk, buttermilk, and pickles.
  2. Foods rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, and can help to soothe acne-affected skin. Foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids include seeds such as flaxseeds, walnuts, canola oil, salmon fish, cod liver oil, mackerel fish, chia seeds, kidney beans, soybean oil, and sardines.
  3. Turmeric – Since times immemorial, turmeric has been known for its anti-inflammatory, medicinal and healing properties. It helps to soothe any inflammation in the gut and also helps to heal the skin. You can season your dish with turmeric, add it to your milk or you can add it to your smoothie.
  4. Green Tea – Research has shown that regular consumption of green tea helps to reduce skin inflammation. It contains a huge amount of antioxidants which help to reduce the blood sugar levels and control the production of excess oil on the skin, which help in fighting acne that is caused due to hormonal imbalances.
  5. Green leafy vegetables – Green leafy vegetables contain lots of antioxidants, have a low glycemic index, and thus they help to heal the skin and keep your complexion clear. Spices, berries and green leafy vegetables and berries should be consumed in plenty since they are loaded with antioxidants.
  6. Fiber – Foods that are rich in fiber aid in digestion, are beneficial for your gut and help to reduce inflammation in the gut. Consuming fibrous foods also helps to delay the signs of aging. Foods that are rich in fiber include flax seeds, chia seeds, almonds, lentils, berries, broccoli, and black beans.
  7. Unsweetened beverages – Replace your aerated beverages with unsweetened beverages such as water, lemon water, spearmint tea, hibiscus tea, sparkling water etc. since water helps to flush out all the toxins from the body and also helps to clear acne from the skin.
