Female cyclist left fighting for her life after a collision with a lorry on Chelsea Bridge

Here’s what happened

A woman in her 30’s was hit by a lorry during Wednesday morning’s rush hour, the driver of the lorry has been arrested ‘on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.’

Air ambulance, paramedics and police were at the scene at 7:50am, the accident happened on the junction by Grosvenor road.

Melissa Fehr said: ‘That was the most traumatic commute I’ve had in years. Started with the aftermath of a cyclist HGV collision at Chelsea Bridge.’ 

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers are dealing with a collision on Chelsea Bridge. 

“A lorry had been in collision with a cyclist. London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended the scene.

“The cyclist, a woman in her mid-30’s, was taken to a west London hospital in a critical condition.

“Her next of kin have been informed.

“The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene and was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

“He has been taken to a central London police station. Enquiries continue.”

Helen Ward wrote on Twitter: “Accident on Chelsea Bridge this morning, looked like bike – lorry collision. I always wheel my bike over the bridge because it’s not safe.”

Peter Christian who is a Cyclist, said to the Standard that he saw a mangled bike under a truck near the back wheels.

He said: “I didn’t want to look towards the scene behind the blue tarpaulin. There were lots of emergency services present. There seemed to be another big truck close behind.”

Chelsea bridge reopened around 1:30pm.
