England set for national lockdown to avoid a ‘human disaster’

England has been put on notice by the government’s scientific advisor for a national lockdown in the New Year as the new variant of the virus is taking grip of the country.

It is expected that on 30 December large areas of England will be placed into Tier 4 when the government review the Tier system.

Sir Patrick Valance said on Monday evening that tougher restrictions will now be needed as “the evidence on this virus is that is spreads easily.”

He warned, the virus is “more transmissible, we absolutely need to make sure we have the right level of restrictions in place.

“I think it is likely that this will grow in numbers of the variant across the country and I think it’s likely, therefore, that measures will need to be increased in some places, in due course, not reduced.”

He added, the virus has spread “everywhere” and England must brace for further restrictions.

“I think it is likely that this will grow in numbers of the variant across the country and I think it’s likely, therefore, that measures will need to be increased in some places, in due course, not reduced.”

Professor Robert West who is part of the government’s scientific advisory group SAGE, said the Prime Minister’s current methods with the Tier system is unlikely to contain the spread of the virus.

Professor Andrew Hayward of University College London professor of infectious disease, told the Guardian newspaper that he also backs a national lockdown.

Professor Hayward said, “I think it’s clearer to give a consistent national message because although the levels of risk are different in different parts of the country, they’re still there and they’re still substantial.”
