A government scientific advisor has said on Monday that the new more contagious variant of coronavirus infects more children, than the previous strain.

The governments’ New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) scientists have warned that the new strain has a “higher propensity to infect children.”

Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College London, who hosted a Q&A at the Science Media Centre, said there is strong evidence that the new strain is 50% more transmissible.

Professor Ferguson said, “We will need to gather more data to see how it behaves going forward.”

He added, “There are other epidemiologically interesting trends with virus, there is a hint that it has a higher propensity to infect children, but we haven’t established any sort of causality on that, but we can see that in the data.”
