What to expect when you switch to a green energy provider

Green energy usually refers to sustainable, less environmentally impactful power sources, available to more planet-conscious consumers. Think wind farms and heat pumps, hydro-power, and, of course, solar panels.

While there are many different forms of clean, green energy, solar power, which of course converts sunlight into electricity, is seen by many as the most viable for widespread, domestic use. Solar panels, usually installed on the roof and out of the way, generate electricity from sunlight for home use.

As panels become increasingly popular in the UK, more and more people are recognising the significant benefits of solar power, namely reduced energy bills and greater independence from the national energy grid.

Thinking about making the switch to green energy? Here’s what to expect.

Energy independence

When you have solar panels, most of the energy your home uses comes from the sun, not energy companies. So, when you’re making energy for free, instead of paying hefty monthly bills, you will quickly notice huge savings on utilities. Panels on your roof mean more money in your pocket.

Solar panels can save you up to 80% on your energy bills. For a medium-sized household (2-3 people), energy prices are around £137 per month. That means monthly savings of up to £109.6, or around £1,300. Imagine how much of a difference that could make for you.

With panels, you can also expect protection from the volatility of energy prices, which, in the UK, have risen by a massive 68.4% over the last 5 years. When you’re largely producing your own energy, you won’t feel those price hikes as much as your neighbours.

Making money from excess energy

During particularly sunny days, you may find that your panels produce more energy than you use. When this happens, you can sell your surplus energy back to the grid under a smart export guarantee (SEG).

SEG is a government-backed scheme that rewards people who’ve invested in green energy for the power they feed back into the national grid. Depending on what tariff you’re on, with SEG, you can expect to earn between 12p and 15p per kWh for your excess energy.

What if you have panels and batteries?

Solar power isn’t just about panels. Many people also invest in solar batteries to store the power their panels generate for later use.

Storing power for later use is great because you can charge your solar batteries during the day, for continued use once the sun’s gone down. That means the sun can power your home, even when it’s not shining somewhere else. And it means that if there’s a power cut, you’ll still be able to keep your home powered.

With batteries, you can also take advantage of the Economy 7 ‘style’ tariff, which allows you to fill up your batteries from the grid at a lower rate, and then use that power during peak hours. This will further reduce your bill.

Easy installation

This depends on who you choose to install your solar power system. With a reputable company, like Everyone’s Energy UK, you get a straightforward installation.

You’ll also get a system optimised for your needs and designed to fit your unique home. Expect a comprehensive analysis on how to maximise your house’s solar potential, followed by an expert installation.

Installation will be professional, stress-free, and fast, with a standard VAT-free fitting taking only 6-8 hours. You’ll benefit from instantly cheaper energy bills and an increase in property value.

How will it change your house?

A solar installation won’t change your house in any noticeable way. Panels can be installed on the roof and out of the way, and batteries can be installed somewhere no one’s going to trip up on them.

The only changes panels make to your house will be the ones you can’t see. Lower energy bills and a lower carbon footprint. The clean, green energy your panels provide can also increase your property’s value, meaning that if you decide to move, you’ll get more money for your old home.
