Menthol ban 2020: What’s best for retailers

From tomorrow, the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations menthol ban comes into place, meaning it will be against the law for any store in the European Union and the UK to sell menthol cigarettes, menthol filters and menthol capsules.

More information: The Menthol Ban 2020

Retailers across the UK and Europe have been thinking about alternatives that they can push to keep sales high and have started introducing new products in advance of the ban to prepare them for tomorrow.

There are an estimated 1.3 million menthol smokers across the UK, and it has been suggested that 39% of these smokers could quit tobacco completely. However, some will make the switch to non-menthol tobacco, while for others, it’ll mean switching to a menthol flavoured vape, as these will remain legal once the ban comes into place. Both shouldn’t affect sales too much.

One product to suggest to smokers that are keen to make the switch is the myblu Intense Liquidpod, with one of their best sellers being menthol flavoured. These have been designed by smokers and include nicotine salts which result in the nicotine being absorbed into the body faster than your standard e-liquids, meaning it should closely replicate the experience of smoking a menthol cigarette.

For retailers, it’s best to learn about what sort of products their customers want and what they think would sell. If you have any regular customers that you know normally smoke menthol, ask them what they’ll be doing from the 20th May and whether they are vaping, quitting completely or switching to another brand.

Most smokers will be aware of this ban already and would’ve done research on what they’re planning on doing instead, but retailers should be in the best position to advise on their products and alternatives, so it’s best to stay in the know about new products that come onto the market.
