There are fears that Greece which is a popular holiday hotspot for Brits could be next on the UK quarantine list as cases have surged by 72.3% in the last week.

Due to a spike in coronavirus infections, the Greek authorities have imposed local restrictions in Mykonos, Halkidiki, Paros and Antiparos.

On Friday there was 209 cases in 24-hours, whilst on Saturday the Greek health authorities recorded 264 new cases, fearing Greece could be added to the UK quarantine list as cases are rising daily.

The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) most recent advice says, “The Greek authorities are likely to impose local coronavirus-related restrictions in certain areas, if they perceive a heightened case-rate or other valid reason, in relation to that area.

“You should monitor the situation regularly via media and other information sources, including your accommodation or travel provider.”

Chancellor Rishi Sunak warned that the government “won’t hesitate” to impose travel restrictions, he advises all holidaymakers to keep up to date on the FCO travel advice, which can change at any moment.

Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias, Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilios Papageorgiou both made the decision to impose strict measures.

The new measures now in force limits a maximum of 50 people at events, including bars, restaurants, theatres and cinemas.

The islands of Crete and Corfu, including the regions of Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Attica, Thessaloniki, Larissa and Corfu, already have enhanced measures.

Also, the municipalities of Santorini, Volos, Katerini, Rhodes, Zakynthos and Kos are operating under measures.

The areas of Karditsa, Pell and Pieria also have enhanced measures banning restaurants, bars and all entertainment venues from opening after Midnight until 7am.

An England football international and two premier league players have tested positive since returning from the Aegean this month, the Sun newspaper reported on Sunday.
