UK set to be hit with new surge in cases spreading from France

The Prime Minister has warned that the UK could be set to be hit with a surge in new cases as the pandemic in France is out of control.

Boris Johnson warned that the UK is typically hit with a similar surge in cases between two to three weeks later.

France has entered their third lockdown this week with a grim death toll of 100,000 and intensive care units almost at breaking point, but Johnson has still not placed France on the government’s travel red list.

Johnson warned, “I’m afraid you can see what’s happening in France… It’s very sad actually, it’s very very sad.

“When they get it in France and they get it bad, two or three weeks later it comes to us.”

Labour has blasted the government saying it is “reckless and unacceptable” not to have a blanket measures on all arrivals to the UK to be forced into quarantine, whilst many are told they can self-isolate at home.

Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds said, “France’s decision to enter a third lockdown makes it even more urgent that the Conservatives introduce stricter border controls.

“It’s reckless and unacceptable for only 1% of international arrivals to quarantine in a hotel.

“I urge Conservative Ministers to urgently secure our borders by introducing a comprehensive hotel quarantine system to protect the nation’s health and the rollout of the vaccine.”
