Fire rages through industrial estate in south east London

A massive fire erupted in Erith in south east London last night sending a huge plume of smoke into the air and requiring almost 100 firefighters to tackle it.

The fire, which engulfed a scrap yard, a number of vehicles and two car repair workshops began in the scrap metal yard at about 6.30pm, and firefighters battled the blaze until 12.30am to bring it under control.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: “Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters and officers from fire stations including Greenwich, Plumstead, Erith, Lee Green, Sidcup, and Bexley attended the scene.”

People shared their photographs of the fire on Twitter.
