The UK has recorded 6,178 coronavirus infections, compared with 4,926 on Tuesday with a further 37 deaths, which is a rise by a quarter.
According to official figures this is the highest recorded in on day since 1 May. England recorded the highest cases at 5,083, Scotland 486, Wales 389 and Northern Ireland with 220.
This comes after the government imposed tighter measures on Tuesday, including a 22:00 closing time for pubs, bars and restaurants in England.
