Restaurants, bars and shops have been boarded up as President Donald Trump has warned there will be “violence on the streets” if the election results are delayed.
Almost 100m votes have already been cast which could take days to count, and the Department of Justice has sent 18 states to control intimidation or suppression against voters.
Around the White House an anti-climb fence has been erected, and the Empire State building was covered in plywood.
