Latvia has declared a multi-region air alert after a suspected drone threat prompted NATO fighter jets to be scrambled over the country in what officials described as an unprecedented escalation in airspace security.
The alert, which covered five regions, marked the first time such a coordinated warning has been issued in the Baltic state since the start of heightened regional tensions linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Military authorities said the decision was taken after unidentified aerial activity was detected near Latvian airspace, triggering an immediate response from NATO’s air policing mission.

Fighter jets were deployed to patrol the skies as precautionary measures while radar systems tracked potential incursions. Officials did not immediately confirm whether any drones had entered Latvian territory or been intercepted.
The incident comes amid growing concern across NATO’s eastern flank over the use of unmanned aerial systems near alliance borders, with Poland, Romania and other member states previously reporting drone-related airspace violations or alerts.
Latvian defence officials have not yet provided details on the origin of the activity, but the activation of a multi-region alert suggests a heightened level of perceived risk rather than an isolated technical anomaly.

NATO has maintained a continuous air policing presence over the Baltic states since they joined the alliance, but incidents triggering live scrambles remain comparatively rare and are typically treated as serious security escalations.
The alert is likely to intensify calls for strengthened air defence integration across the region as NATO members continue to adapt to the evolving drone warfare environment seen in Ukraine.
Officials are expected to release further details once airspace monitoring assessments are complete.
