Fresh border tension as a reconnaissance drone discovered inside NATO

Polish authorities are investigating the discovery of a suspected reconnaissance drone near the town of Bartoszyce, close to the border with Russia’s heavily militarised Kaliningrad exclave, in the latest security incident to unsettle Nato’s eastern flank.

Military police said the unmanned aircraft was found roughly 20 kilometres from the Russian frontier and preliminary analysis suggested it was “likely a military reconnaissance drone” without offensive capabilities.

The device reportedly bore Russian-language markings and was fitted with multiple cameras mounted along its fuselage, according to Polish broadcaster RMF FM, which cited unofficial sources familiar with the investigation.

Officials have not formally attributed the drone to Russia, though Polish authorities confirmed it was a foreign object and not of domestic origin. Investigators are examining whether it may have entered Polish airspace from Kaliningrad, Moscow’s heavily armed Baltic enclave situated between Poland and Lithuania.

Given the drone’s reported range limitations, local media suggested it was highly unlikely to have originated from Ukraine.

The incident adds to mounting concern across Nato’s eastern members over repeated airspace violations linked to the war in Ukraine. Russian drones and missiles have periodically crossed into neighbouring countries during attacks on Ukrainian territory, heightening fears of accidental escalation.

Earlier this week, several drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia, with one reportedly crashing near an oil storage facility in the eastern city of Rezekne, close to the Russian border. Latvian officials suggested those drones may have been stray Ukrainian aircraft targeting Russian positions.

The discovery near Bartoszyce is likely to intensify scrutiny of activity around Kaliningrad, one of Russia’s most strategically significant military outposts and home to advanced missile systems, naval assets and electronic warfare capabilities.

For Poland — among Ukraine’s strongest supporters and one of Nato’s most militarily active frontline states — the appearance of a suspected reconnaissance drone so close to the border will reinforce broader concerns about the increasingly blurred boundaries between the war in Ukraine and wider regional security risks.

While Polish authorities stressed there was no immediate threat to the public, the investigation is expected to focus on whether the drone was conducting surveillance activity and how it came to enter Polish territory undetected.
