Britain has been warned that its water supplies could become the target of a major cyberattack after Iranian-linked hackers launched a series of assaults on critical infrastructure across the United States.

The warning comes amid growing concern over the vulnerability of water and energy networks to hostile states, following suspected Iranian cyber operations against dozens of American water facilities.

US authorities have been investigating attacks affecting water systems across multiple states, with more than 30 facilities in Minnesota alone targeted during one coordinated campaign. Federal agencies have warned that Iranian-affiliated hackers are increasingly attempting to penetrate industrial control systems used by water, wastewater and energy providers.

The attacks have raised fresh questions over whether Britain’s ageing and increasingly digital infrastructure could face similar threats.

Water networks are considered particularly vulnerable because many facilities rely on internet-connected operational technology, allowing staff to monitor and control equipment remotely but potentially creating an entry point for hostile actors.

The latest escalation in Iranian cyber activity comes against the backdrop of the continuing conflict between Washington and Tehran.

The threat has particular resonance in Britain following reports that an Iranian-linked cyberattack disabled an unidentified UK power facility for four days last month.

British security officials reportedly viewed the incident as a potential demonstration of Tehran’s ability to disrupt critical national infrastructure beyond the Middle East.

Cybersecurity experts have long warned that water systems represent an attractive target for hostile governments because of their importance to everyday life and the potential disruption caused by even relatively limited attacks.

A successful intrusion could interfere with water treatment processes, reduce pressure in supply networks or force operators to switch to manual systems.

Iran has increasingly been accused by Western intelligence agencies of using cyberattacks as an asymmetric weapon against more powerful adversaries.

Unlike a conventional military strike, a cyberattack can be difficult to attribute and may allow hostile governments to deny responsibility while still causing significant disruption.

The latest incidents in America are therefore likely to heighten pressure on British ministers and infrastructure operators to review the defences protecting essential services.

With water, energy and telecommunications systems becoming increasingly interconnected, security experts fear that a successful attack on one part of the country’s critical infrastructure could have consequences far beyond the immediate target.

For households, the prospect remains largely hypothetical. But the attacks in the United States have provided a stark illustration of how quickly a conflict thousands of miles away can extend into the computer systems controlling the most basic services on which modern societies depend.
