Health Secretary Matt Hancock told MPs in the House of Commons that Liverpool and the wider Merseyside region, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Warrington are now ordered to into social lockdown.

From this weekend the new social lockdown restrictions will take place affecting more than 1m people.

In a statement Hancock told MPs in the House of Commons: “Earlier this week we brought in further measures in the North-East, however in parts of Teesside and the North-West of England cases continue to rise fast.

“In Liverpool, the number of cases is 268 per 100,000 population, so together we need to act.

“Working with council leaders and the mayors, I’m today extending these measures that have been in the North East since the start of this week to the Liverpool City Region, Warrington, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough.

“We will provide £7 million to local authorities in these areas to support them with their vital work.”

Londoners have also been warned by a health chief that the capital is now at “tipping point” and that a “circuit breaker” could come into force next week across the capital.

Professor Kevin Fenton, London’s regional director of Public Health England warned, “Cases of coronavirus in London have been steadily increasing in recent weeks and we are now at a tipping point in our efforts to limit the spread of the virus in the city,” he warned.

“Londoners still hold the key to reducing infection rates and lessening the impact of any second wave by making a continued conscious effort to consider our movements and behaviour.”
