A vital bridge linking occupied Crimea with Russian-controlled territory in southern Ukraine has been damaged in a Ukrainian drone strike, in what appears to be a significant escalation in Kyiv’s campaign to disrupt Moscow’s supply lines.
Volodymyr Saldo, the Russian-installed head of the occupied parts of the Kherson region, claimed the overnight strike hit the Chonhar area, damaging the bridge deck and forcing the suspension of traffic through the nearby Dzhankoi checkpoint “for security reasons”.
The crossing forms one of the principal land corridors connecting Crimea to occupied mainland Ukraine, and has long been considered a critical artery for the movement of military supplies, fuel and personnel supporting Russian operations in the south.
The reported strike comes amid an intensifying Ukrainian effort to degrade Russia’s logistics infrastructure, particularly routes running through occupied Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions into the Crimean peninsula.
In recent weeks, Crimea has also faced growing disruption to fuel supplies, with Russian authorities acknowledging shortages linked to repeated strikes on storage depots and transport networks. Kyiv has increasingly targeted infrastructure deep behind the front line, using medium-range drones and precision strikes to stretch Russian defensive systems.

Ukraine’s military has not commented directly on the Chonhar incident, in line with its usual policy on operations in occupied territory. However, Ukrainian forces have previously signalled an intent to isolate Crimea by systematically pressuring the narrow land corridor connecting it to Russia.
Military analysts have described the route as one of the most strategically sensitive in the theatre, warning that sustained disruption could complicate Russia’s ability to reinforce and resupply its positions across southern Ukraine.
The latest strike underscores the expanding reach of Ukraine’s drone campaign, which has increasingly targeted logistics hubs, transport arteries and military infrastructure well beyond the immediate front line.
For Moscow, the reported damage to the Chonhar bridge marks another setback in a region already under sustained pressure, as Kyiv continues to chip away at the infrastructure underpinning Russia’s occupation of Crimea.
