Sunak will have an intelligence briefing on ‘imminent threats’ to UK and will ‘write letters of last resort’ amid Putin’s nuclear threats

The incoming Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will will hold a formal meeting with King Charles III on Tuesday morning and then he will have his first intelligence briefing.

Simon Case the Cabinet Secretary, the head of the Civil Service will brief the Prime Minister over “imminent threats” the UK are facing amid Vladimir Putin’s serious threats of launching nuclear weapons.

Sunak will this morning write “letters of last resort” in the event of a nuclear strike from any country in the world whereby nuclear submarine commanders will be ordered what to do in a strike.

Sir Anthony Seldon, an eminent UK political historian, told Sky News, “He’ll have to write the letters of last resort about – in the event of a nuclear strike – what would you recommend the submarine commanders with the nuclear weapons to do.

“That’s normally been something which seemed like a far distance away.

“But now, because of Vladimir Putin, the risk of nuclear war becomes higher.”

There are strong fears that Russia are preparing to use a radioactive filled “dirty bomb” over Ukraine to then blame Kyiv for the detonation.

The White House has issued a shot to Moscow warning that there will “consequences for Russia” if they use either a “dirty bomb” or a “nuclear weapon.”

The US State Department spokesperson Ned Price warned Moscow, “We’ve been very clear with the Russians… about the severe consequences that would result from nuclear use.

“There would be consequences for Russia whether it uses a dirty bomb or a nuclear bomb.”
